Merrimack PTA Kindergarten and Preschool is a private non-profit organization established in 1961 under the auspices of the Parent Teacher Association of the Merrimack School District.
The educational philosophy of the Merrimack PTA Kindergarten and Preschool is to promote the total
development of each child and respect individual differences. The Merrimack PTA Kindergarten and
Preschool staff believes a child’s self-confidence and self-esteem are fundamental to learning and typical development.
The land on which the Merrimack PTA Kindergarten and Preschool now resides was once the home of the McGaw Normal Institute, a teaching college formed in the late 19th century. After the institute closed, it was re-purposed for educational use as the town’s high school until it was ultimately replaced by what is now Mastricola Middle School on Baboosic Lake Road.
Like the land, the building that houses Merrimack PTA Kindergarten & Preschool had a previous life in education. Modern education was turning its back on the notion of one-room school houses and moving to the large, less intimate schools we know today. When the McGaw Institute came down, the town of Merrimack currently had twelve one-room school houses and very little use for them. The school house was moved here and we sure are glad to have it. We think you’ll agree that our little school house has character and charm you just can’t find anywhere else these days.
